Fuel costs have been fluctuating recently -- if you're looking to save money at the pump, check out our picks for the best gas rewards credit cards.
At some point we've all complained about the price of gas. And I can't tell you how many times I've heard my grandparents and even my parents talk about how upset they were when the price of gas went up over a dollar - how times have changed.
While I don't have the answer to how to get older generations to stop boring you with stories about how much cheaper things used to be, I can share a simple way to save at the gas pump: consider a cash rewards credit card that offers cash back at gas stations.
Best Gas Credit Cards
Discover it Chrome
Like all Discover cards, you get one percent cash back on all purchases with this card. That gets bumped up to two percent at gas stations and restaurants up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. At the end of your first year as an account holder, Discover will match your cash back rewards. This package is really expansive and it leads to the Discover it Chrome coming in at the top of our list of best gas credit cards.
Discover now offers social security monitoring and alerts if your number is found on any number of risky websites. You'll also be notified if any new credit cards, mortgages, car loans, or other accounts are opened in your name.
This card (like all Discover cards) has no annual fee.
BankAmericard Cash Rewards card
With the BankAmericard Cash Rewards card, you'll receive one percent cash back on every purchase. You'll also get two percent at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, and three percent on gas for the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter.
At the time of writing, you can get a $150 online cash rewards bonus after making at least $500 in purchases in the first 90 days of your accounting opening.
In addition, if you're a Bank of America customer, you can get a 10 percent bonus ever time you redeem your cash back into a Bank of America checking or savings account.
There is no annual fee for this card.
ExxonMobil Smart card
With the ExxonMobil Smart Card you can save six cents on every gallon, and there's no limit to how much you can save. With more than 11,000 Exxon and Mobil locations, you can use the card all across the country.
You can create an online account and easily manage and track your fuel purchases. Like most other credit cards, you're also protected under the $0 fraud liability or unauthorized charges.
Finally, you can give extra cards to your family at no additional cost.
Shell Drive for Five card
With the Shell Drive for Five card, you'll get 25 cents off every gallon of Shell fuel for the first two months of your account opening! After that, you'll get a still respectable five cents off. Like Exxon and Mobile, there are thousands of Shell locations nationwide, so you should never have a problem finding a station.
Also similar to the ExxonMobile card, you're protected with a $0 liability on unauthorized charges. You can also manage your account online, and request extra cards at no additional cost.
Sunoco Rewards credit card
With the Sunoco card, you can get five cents off every gallon at any Sunoco station. With 6,600 locations, you'll be able to use this card all around the country.
You can get additional rewards at the pump if you register your phone number at your local grocery store website.
You can give your family members a card at no additional cost.
Well Fargo Propel American Express card
The Well Fargo Propel card offers 3x points at U.S. gas stations, 2x points at restaurants and 1x on other net purchases.
At the time of writing, you can get 20,000 bonus points if you spend $1,000 in the first three months of opening an account.
This card has no annual fee and no foreign currency conversion fees.
Blue Cash Everyday from Amex
This card offers three percent cash back at supermarkets (up to $6,000 a year in purchases, then one percent). It also offers two percent cash back at gas stations and select department stores, and one percent on other purchases.
At the time of writing, the Blue Cash Everyday card is offering $200 back after spending $1,000 in the first three months.
There's no annual fee for this card.
Citi ThankYou Premier card
The Citi ThankYou card is not only great for fuel savings, but it's a decent travel rewards card as well. It gives you 3x at gas stations and other travel expenses. These include, but are not limited to: airfare, hotels, cruises, car rentals, and travel agencies.
You'll also get 2x on dining out and entertainment, which includes live entertainment such as concerts, sports, zoos, and amusement parks. You also receive 1x on all other purchases.
The only drawback with the Citi ThankYou card, is that it has a $95 annual fee. However, the fee is waived for the first 12 months.
Chase Ink Business Cash credit card
The Chase Ink Business Cash card is designed for, as the title suggests, business owners. It offers five percent cash back on the first $25,000 in combined purchases at office supply stores and your internet, cable, and phone bills each year.
You'll also get two percent cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases from gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year. You'll receive one percent cash back on all other purchases.
Currently, there's a $300 bonus cash back offer after you spend $3,000 in the first three months of opening an account.
You can add employee card to your account at no additional cost. This card also has no annual fee.
So, which do we recommend?
That, of course, depends on what exactly you're looking for.
A great general cash back card that also doubles as a decent gas card is the Discover it Chrome card. It's hard to go wrong with any of the Discover it cards, since you'll get five percent back in some category (depending on the quarter). Plus, two percent back at gas stations is also a great deal. If you drive frequently and need to fill up your tank more often, you'll be met with a great bonus at the end of the year when Discover matches all your cash back.
I put it top of the list of best gas credit cards because of its versatility -- even if you don't drive a lot one month, the card will still work for you in other areas of your life.
In my personal experience, a great credit card just for gas is the Sunoco Rewards credit card. But I also get points from my grocery store - so that is what truly makes it worth it. Five cents off may not seem like much, but paired with the substantial grocery points, you're looking at great savings. And I only shop for myself and my partner, larger families earn even more points because they have to buy more anyway.
For people who drive a lot and want to maximize their savings at the pump, this is my favorite gas rewards credit card.
If you can't sign up for extra rewards at grocery stores, the second best card just for gas is definitely the ExxonMobil Smart card, which offer six cents off rather than five (again, that adds up).
This is a straightforward gas rewards card. Exxon and Mobil stations are everywhere, so you should have no problem finding a station. Plus, all smartphones allow you to search for certain gas station near you if you ever can't find one.
